The Beaver

Beavers are a primarily nocturnal, large, semi-aquatic rodent. They are the second largest rodent in the world. They are known for creating their habitat they live in by building dams on rivers and streams, and then building their homes in the resulting pond. Beavers also build canals to float building materials that are difficult to haul over land, and also to transport their food. The North American beaver population was once more than 60 million, but as of 1988 was 6–12 million. This population decline is the result of extensive hunting for fur, for glands used as medicine and perfume, and because the beavers' harvesting of trees and flooding of waterways can interfere with other land uses. So if you live in a more rural area, and are experiencing unusual flooding, you may have a beaver problem. The flooding caused by beaver dams can result in additional problems including property damage, flooding of roadways, and loss of trees and other vegetation.
